BETRAYAL OF HOPE

Book Synopsis

A collection to challenge and inspire

These poems are about the broken promises of leaders who campaigned most vociferously for change. Written during an election period during which young people were inspired to stand up and challenge the status quo, they explore what happens when those hopes are betrayed by the very people who championed. Now many of those young people have been murdered or are in prison or exile, and those who campaigned for change continue to administer a corrupt system.

Tackling difficult themes such as systemic corruption, the greed for power, failures in the health system and nepotism, they draw on the author's experience of growing up during difficult times.  Although rooted in a particular national experience, the themes are universal and will find resonance with anyone who has dared to challenge the intransigence of power.

Through these poems, Victor Rumanyika, who is now based in Wolverhampton, hopes to draw attention to the violation of human rights and the struggle for social justice worldwide.
